Human composting is still a new idea for many people in the UK. For some, it sounds beautifully simple: a body returning to soil, helping nourish trees, plants, and living landscapes. For others, the phrase can feel surprising, unfamiliar, or even a little uncomfortable at first.

First, what do we mean by human composting?
Human composting is the plain-English term for a process more formally known as natural organic reduction, or NOR.
In simple terms, it is a controlled process that transforms a person's body into soil-like material. The body is usually placed in a specially designed vessel with natural materials such as wood chips, straw, alfalfa, or similar plant matter. These materials help create the right balance of carbon, nitrogen, moisture, oxygen, and warmth.
Microbes then do what microbes have always done in nature: they break organic matter down. The difference is that human composting happens in a carefully managed setting, rather than slowly in the ground.
After the process is complete, the resulting soil is usually tested before it can be returned to the family, used for planting, or placed in a conservation or memorial landscape, depending on local laws.
It is not a backyard compost heap. It is not casual, informal, or unregulated. In the places where it is legal, it is treated as a professional funeral service, with rules around licensing, health, safety, dignity, and environmental protection.
The United States: the main pioneer
The United States has led the way on human composting. This is partly because funeral law in the US is handled at state level, meaning individual states can change their own rules rather than waiting for a single national law.
Washington State was the first to legalise natural organic reduction. The law was passed in 2019 and came into effect in 2020. This was a major moment, because it moved human composting from theory and small-scale research into legal, regulated practice.
Since then, more states have followed. As of June 2026, human composting has been legalised in 14 US states:

Legalisation is not instant availability

Once a new funeral method is introduced somewhere, other lawmakers can look at what worked, what caused concern, and what needs tightening. This is how regulation often develops: one place goes first, another adapts the model, and over time a clearer pattern emerges.
The early US adopters helped normalise several key ideas:

When states such as New York and California moved to legalise human composting, the issue gained wider attention.
These are large, influential states with major cities, diverse populations, and strong media interest. Their involvement helped bring human composting into mainstream conversation, not just environmental or alternative funeral circles.
California is a useful example of the gap between passing a law and creating a functioning system. Human composting has been legalised there, but full in-state availability depends on the rules and facilities being ready. This is a useful reminder for the UK: if Parliament or devolved governments chose to legalise human composting, it would still take time to build the practical system.
That system would need to answer questions such as:
- Who can operate a facility?
- What training should staff need?
- What environmental permits are required?
- How should the process be monitored?
- What testing is needed before soil is released?
- Can families take soil home?

The heart of public trust

However, the US picture remains patchy. Human composting is legal in some states but not others. In places where it is not legal, families may still sometimes arrange for a body to be transported to a state where the process is allowed, depending on the provider and local rules.
This raises another lesson for the UK: people may want these choices before the law is ready for them. When demand grows faster than regulation, families can be left navigating complicated, expensive, and emotionally difficult arrangements.
A clear UK framework would help prevent confusion. It would also protect families from vague claims, poor practice, or providers operating in uncertain legal territory.
Germany: early European movement
In Europe, the picture is more cautious.
One of the most interesting developments is in Germany, where the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein has allowed a form of human composting through a partial or pilot-style approach. The German term often used is Reerdigung, which roughly means "re-earthing" or "returning to earth".
This is not the same as saying human composting is widely legal across Germany or Europe. It is not. But it does show that European jurisdictions are beginning to explore the idea in practical terms.
Germany is particularly relevant to the UK because European countries often have long-established funeral traditions, strict cemetery laws, and strong cultural expectations around burial and cremation. Introducing a new method requires careful public engagement, not just technical regulation.
The German experience suggests that pilots may be useful. Rather than immediately rolling out human composting nationwide, a government could allow limited trials under strict conditions. These trials could help answer practical questions about safety, soil testing, public acceptance, religious concerns, facility design, and environmental impact.
What about Sweden?
Sweden is sometimes mentioned in discussions about human composting because of earlier work around a process called promession. This involved freezing and breaking down remains before burial in shallow soil.
However, promession is different from the natural organic reduction model now used in the United States. For a UK audience, it is worth being careful with the terminology. Not every "green funeral technology" is the same thing.
This matters because public trust depends on clear language. If we use human composting, natural organic reduction, promession, terramation, soil transformation, and green burial as though they all mean exactly the same thing, people will understandably get confused.
For the UK, plain English will be essential.
Is human composting legal in the UK?
At the moment, human composting is not available as a regulated mainstream funeral option in the UK.
In England and Wales, burial, cremation, and burial at sea are the established regulated methods. Newer methods, including human composting and alkaline hydrolysis, have sat in an uncertain legal space.
The Law Commission has now looked at this issue and recommended a framework for regulating new funerary methods. This does not mean human composting is already legal and available. It means the legal groundwork is being discussed and developed.
That distinction is important. The UK is not at the same stage as Washington or Colorado. It is at the framework stage: asking what kind of law would be needed, who should regulate new methods, and what principles should guide future decisions.
What can the UK learn?
The UK does not need to copy the US model exactly. Our funeral law, planning system, environmental regulation, land pressures, and public expectations are different. But there is still a great deal to learn.
1. Create a clear legal category
Human composting should not be left in a grey area. If it is introduced, it needs a defined legal status.
The law should say what the method is, who can provide it, how it is recorded, and what counts as completion of the process. This protects families, providers, regulators, and the wider public.
2. License providers properly
In US states where human composting is legal, providers generally need approval from the relevant funeral or mortuary regulator.
The UK would need something similar. Facilities should not simply open because they have bought equipment or adopted the right language. They should meet standards before operating.
Licensing could cover staff training, facility design, handling of bodies, infection control, odour control, record keeping, soil testing, and complaints procedures.
3. Test the resulting soil
Soil is central to human composting. It is also where many public concerns will focus.
People will want to know whether the soil is safe. Could it contain pathogens? What about medical implants, residues, or contaminants? Where can it be used? Should it be allowed in food-growing areas? Should it be restricted to trees, flowers, memorial gardens, conservation land, or cemetery grounds?
A UK system would need clear testing standards and clear rules for use.

One sensible route for the UK could be controlled trials before wider approval. These could help regulators gather evidence, test public response, and understand practical risks.
Trials would need strong safeguards, including consent from the person before death, independent oversight, environmental monitoring, and transparent reporting.
This would allow the UK to move thoughtfully rather than either rushing ahead or avoiding the subject altogether.
A new choice, not the only choice
Human composting is not going to be for everyone. Nor should it be presented as the only "good" ecological funeral choice.
Natural burial already offers many people a gentler, lower-impact alternative to conventional burial and cremation. Other emerging methods, such as alkaline hydrolysis, may also become part of the future funeral landscape.
But human composting offers something distinct. It speaks to the idea that our bodies are not waste. They are organic matter. They can return to the living world in a way that is intentional, cared for, and connected to place.
For people who have spent their lives loving gardens, woodlands, soil, wildlife, farming, or conservation, that can feel deeply meaningful.
The UK has a chance to learn carefully
The UK is not starting from scratch. It can study what has happened in Washington, Colorado, Oregon, New York, California, New Jersey, and other US states. It can watch early European developments. It can listen to scientists, funeral directors, faith groups, environmental organisations, bereaved families, land managers, and the public.
The question is not simply: "Should human composting be legal?"
The better question is: "What would a safe, respectful, ecological, and trustworthy system need to look like?"
Other places have shown that human composting can be introduced into law. They have also shown that the details matter: licensing, testing, land use, consent, language, dignity, and long-term care.
If the UK chooses to move forward, it has an opportunity to create a framework that is not rushed or careless, but thoughtful and rooted in public trust.
Death will always be tender territory. But perhaps, with care, it can also become part of how we restore life: feeding trees, rebuilding soil, supporting habitats, and helping families feel that their loved one has returned to the earth in a way that is gentle, useful, and full of meaning.
